Welcome to South Texas Bully Alliance

South Texas Bully Alliance (STXBA) is a volunteer-based, 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and future no-kill shelter with a charitable purpose of animal welfare. Our organization specializes in the restoration and rehabilitation of bully breeds in Houston and the South Texas region. Several breeds of dogs are commonly referred to as pit-bull types or bully breeds. Primarily, these are the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the American Bulldog, etc. These all share common ancestors and some history. The development and recognition of pit-bull types have been inextricably bound to changing social norms and volatile public opinion since their inception, but simply put good dogs start with good owners and our organization intends on implementing proper responsibility and education of the loyal breeds in the bully breed class.

Pit Bull Types Euthanasia Statistics

Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes average about 33% of shelter intakes nationally, but in large cities the numbers are as high as 40%-65%. About 75% of municipal shelters euthanize Pit Bulls immediately upon intake, without them ever having any chance at adoption.
Those that are offered for adoption are usually the first chosen for euthanasia when overcrowding forces the shelter's hand and decisions have to be made.

Studies estimate that up to 1 million Pits are euthanized per year, or 2,800 per day. Some estimates are up to double that number. A study by the organization Animal People reports a 93% euthanasia rate for Pit Bulls and only 1 in 600 Pits finding a forever home. (Statistics are cited from examiner.com)Recently the Humane Society of the United States reported abuse against pit bull-type dogs appears to be on the rise: in 2000–2001, pit bull-type dogs were involved in 13% of reported dog-abuse cases; in 2007, they were involved in 25% of reported dog-abuse cases.
